Western Australia Really Getting Tough on Smoking

If you are a smoker, Western Australia is not the ideal place to visit for you. The laws on smoking are getting tougher and tougher, with the fine for smoking in cars carrying children ringing in at $1,000. Ban on smoking on beaches is also soon to be passed — it is just a matter of a law being passed in the Lower House of Parliament.

MP Jane Woollard said hopes are high for the bill and it is expected to be passed as early as next week.

This new law will also ban smoking within 10 meters of any playground, the outdoor areas of cafes and restaurants, as well as 50% of outdoor areas near hotels and most beaches. Advertisement of cigarettes will also be banned in all shops, and tobacco products will have to be stored under the counter.

The initial fine for breaking this law will be $200, but could go up to $1,000 for repeated offenses.

These laws have been found to be effective, but smoking vacationers will not be able to enjoy the beaches of West Australia the way they might have in the past…
