Smoking bans are moving out of Chicago indoor areas into the parks of local suburbs. After a survey was done by a group of students, residents are pushing to have smoking banned in the Park District.
In mid-June, nearly 752 acres of parkland were declared smoke-free. However, the ban extends only to the fairways of two golf courses, and as of yet there are no monetary fines for smoking.
But park officials are confident in the fact that smokers will police themselves when they see the signs that have been placed in the parks.
Rich Walker, director of parks and recreation says, "We're just going to take it real slow. We're certainly not interested in disrupting family picnics."
Even if such actions are being taken at a slow pace, they are eventually going to effect somebody's family picnic or outing, and eventually these kinds of laws will infringe on a smokers right to freedom.
