Gruesome Images on Cigarette Packs

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009   ·   Comments   ·   Share This

Gruesome Images on Cigarette PacksMost people would be put off by the image of a mouth ravaged by cancer and rotting teeth that is if they are not smokers.

New federal regulations are soon to go into effect in the US, where cigarette packages will be covered front and back with disturbing images of the effects of smoking.

These regulations are modeled after those already in place in Canada and other countries. The warning labels will have images of blackened lungs, gangrenous feet, bleeding brains and people breathing with the help of tracheotomies.

However, smokers have already seen gruesome images both on the internet and on TV. It is more likely that they will get used to the images, or rather become numb to them and continue to smoke, after the government has spent millions on funding this kind of project…

The Double Standards of Smoking

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009   ·   Comments   ·   Share This

Brad PittAngelina Jolie is known for her fight for human rights and her general need to help humankind. Perhaps she is the final link to banning tobacco use and pot smoking?

As well-known and wealth as he is, Brad Pitt still sleeps on the couch, as he did recently when he had a fight with Angelina when she found out that he had lied to her about smoking pot.

Angelina's jealousy came through during this fight as she blames Jennifer Aniston for Pitt's habit, Jolie told friends a few weeks before the fight that Brad had quit smoking pot. But a source said, "She was angry and looking for someone to blame, so Jen is always going to be a prime target."

The insider continued, "Angie, feeling she's been totally lied to, is piecing together all the other things Brad's not been truthful to her about and come up with a fairly long list."

But this showed the double sided aspect of our standards today - Obama is receiving a lot of flack for smoking tobacco while Pitt has barely gotten any for his addiction to marijuana.

Detroit Slow to Implement Smoking Ban

Sunday, August 30th, 2009   ·   Comments   ·   Share This

ashtrayThere has been a push to ban smoking in bars and restaurants in Detroit, but all the edges have not yet been smoothed out so it is still possible to smoke at most establishments in the city.

Non-smokers are up in arms about this fact, especially since smoking is not against the law in most restaurants. It is felt by many that smoking can really ruin a person's meal, which is something even for smokers.

However, there is really no reason for the non-smoking population to be worried about this, as the legislation will be passed - it's just a matter of time.

The problem is that the addresses of non-smoking bars are being published on the internet, and this could really cause problems for some businesses. It is also an unfair trade, because when the law is passed smokers will not have this kind of choice, a fact that is often overlooked…

The Cost of Helping Smokers Quit on the Rise

Saturday, August 29th, 2009   ·   Comments   ·   Share This

smokerIn Britain, a lot of money has been put into smoking cessation services, but the number of people making use of them has not increased. Officials feel that helping smokers has become more difficult and that doing something to help these services would just be a waste of money.

Out of the 671,259 people who had set themselves a quit date in one program, only half managed to stay off cigarettes for more than four weeks.

Nearly 21 percent more money was spent on stop services in 2008/2009 than in the previous year, while there was a 1 percent drop in the number of people using the services.

Thousands of dollars are spent on banning smoking, and there are fewer smokers than there were in the past, and it cannot be expected for numbers to increase. If money is being spent on banning tobacco the same should be done for helping smokers quit… but only if they want to quit. It should be a choice, after all.

Smoke Screens: The Truth About Tobacco

I'm glad to report that we have a new Smokeen friend - Rich White from Smoke Screens. He's about to release the book called "Smoke Screens: The Truth About Tobacco," offering an objective analysis of the science and politics of the smoking issue. You know how annoyed you are with all the smoking bans being implemented around the world — well you can read more about it in the book, to help you get around the bans. On that note, Rich said that one of the site's readers used various bits of information to confront the mayor about the smoking bans there.

While waiting for the book to be released, we advise you to check Rich White's website where you can read great articles on the subject, subscribe to his newsletter, as well as participate in the forum where you can share ideas with fellow smokers.
